It’s impossible not to be seduced by a legitimate afternoon tea when you visit the land of the Queen, isn’t it? After all, the tea has been a tradition in the life of the Londoners for decades. You know how the habit of Afternoon Tea began? That was when the English King Charles II married Portuguese Catherine of Braganza, the daughter of King John VI. Chic! And thats when the ritual gained strength.
Today there are endless options. They range from the most pompous in the classic hotels of the city, to the creative ones that present their sweets and sandwiches in themed versions that accompany the fashion launches of the season or even in two-storey red buses running through the city.
On my last visit to the English capital, I chose the Afternoon Tea from the Shangri-La At The Shard Hotel. Renzo Piano’s glass building by itself is an icon in the city. Sitting at a table on the 35th floor, facing the Thames River, having the city at your feet, is quite a program. Then, add to that a selection of spectacular teas, sandwiches and sweets super well presented, and of course, many scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam. Unmissable. Such a charming place that you won’t want to leave. It’s a beautiful way to celebrate Valentine’s Day which is right around the corner.
Jot down this tip and I am sure you will not regret it. Incidentally, Shangri-La, apart from tea, is a beautiful hotel to stay in London.
