You know one of those places that seems to have come out of a postal card? Next to a lake, quiet, organized, modern, extremely clean, rich, secure. This is Zurich. With a wonderful aspect of a small town. You can’t even believe that it is the largest city in Switzerland. But it is. It has less than 400 thousand happy inhabitants with their quality of life and with the peace that it reigns. It is so good to be able to move through the streets without fear during the day or night. I felt so secure. I spent an amazing week in the financial center of Switzerland.
Everything around there works to perfection. You arrive at the airport, there is free wi-fi, you go through customs without any stress, there is easy connection from the airport to the city center by train in 10 minutes and if you prefer a taxi, the driver will be correct with you. This is so awesome!
When arriving by train at the Central Station, be sure to look at the ceiling as soon as you land. Note the huge colorful Guardian Angel. It is a work by Niki de Saint-Phalle, which floats in the air trapped by steel cables. A luxury! Then the Limmat river and Lake Zurich will serve as a reference to guide you. It is very easy, there’s no way to get lost. Walk without haste. The streets are beautiful. The architecture is very graceful. Bridges connect the two sides of the river and the symmetrical towers of the Grossmünsteer cathedral can be seen from afar.
If the day is sunny, sit on a little table in the open air for a coffee accompanied by a some sweets. The fame of the patisseries are huge. I recommend two, The Sprungli and Conditorei schober. In these two places everything you ask, the chances of it being good is big, but since we are talking about Switzerland, don’t forget the chocolate! One of the best in the world.
When you want to relax, I recommend the spa of the hippest hotel of the city – The Dolder Grand. It is located on higher region and away from the city. It is not the ideal place to stay (unless you’re at a conference there yourself) by being relatively outside the center. You have to go by car or funicular. However, for a Spa day, it is THE place! A nice hotel on the edge of the lake is the Baur au Lac. Elegant, classic, exclusive and super well located. In addition, it has a gorgeous garden, with a super charming cafe which overlooks the lake. An idyllic place.
I recommend that you stay at least three days to enjoy all the peace that Zurich has to offer. And don’t forget the cheese, chocolate, fondue, and raclette. Ah, how not to love?
