Hi guys!

Today is a day to celebrate and to thank. Exactly a year ago I wrote my first post with #TravelTips here on Camila Coelho’s blog. The year flew by – like it does when we do something with please. Thank you all for the kindness with which you welcomed me this year, for the super nice and thoughtful comments and Camila’s generosity, who came into my life to stay! I am privileged to be able to share my discoveries around the world with such a special group of readers/followers on this amazing blog that I love so much!

And since special dates deserve special destinations, today’s post is on one of the most coveted routes in the world, the Romantic Road in Bavaria, southern Germany, where I was last week. The 300 kilometer route runs from Füssen to Wurzburg and has the most idyllic scenery in Germany. It is hard to tell which of the two is the most charming city!

I rented a car in Zurich and headed to Germany. In less than two hours (and after sighing a thousand on the beautiful road full of verdant fields and mountains with snowy peaks) I reached the first Romantic city of Strasse, Füssen. A cute town near a crystalline lake with charming houses as of they were “dollhouses” and two dreamy castles. Do you know who was inspired by the Neuschwanstein Castle (the most beautiful of the Romantic Road) to build his dream world? Walt Disney. The Cinderella Castle was born there. What a beautiful city and castle! It is definitely worth spending a couple of nights in Füssen.

Then drive slowly down the route. It is also possible to go by bus and train, but the freedom of being in a car is second to none. The roads are excellent, well signposted. Follow Schwangau, Halblech (a beautiful castle, stop by the lake for a picnic), Steiningaden, Rottenbuch, Peliting, Schongau, Hohenfurch, Landsberg am Lech (a cute town with two beautiful gothic churches – Bayertor and Mutterturm), Friedberg, and Augsburg. Make lots of stops to have lunch, to take photos, to walk around, have some coffee, and grab some sweets to eat. Augsburg is another friendly city to spend an evening. It is one of the biggest cities along the route and one of the most charming!

This route can be done in two days or a week, it all depends on how much time you have available. I did it in four days and I swear I would have stayed longer. Continue up Donauworth, which lies in between the Wornitz and Danube rivers. Make a stop in Harburg to visit one of the oldest castles in Germany, dating from 1093. The road at this point is beautiful as it passes through the Black forest. Nordlingen is another beautiful walled medieval town. Climb the 365 steps up to the St. Georg church tower to see the city from above, then pass quickly through Wallerstein and soon enough you will see another charming town called Dinkelsbühl.

Then comes the largest star, Rothemburg-ob-der-Tauber – simply magical. My favorite city in Germany. You can’t stay just a few hours and leave, you need to spend a least a full day and night. Walk through the streets of stone floors – each stone continues to tell a story orchestrated by kings and emperors. A ring of walls protects the historic center with 42 towers. You can walk through the walls and see the city from the sentinels’ point of view. When the night falls, it is worth following the night watchman on a guided walk through the alleys.

This is the city that you must include in your itinerary! A delightful hotel is the Reichskuchenmeister, one block from the Marktplatz central square. It’s so cute! As for the corner room 304, with flowers on the windows and a huge bathroom.

Keep going up the Main Valley. You will pass through many beautiful medieval towns among them, Creglingen, Rottingen, Welkersheim, Bad Mergenthein, Lauda-Königshofen and Tauberbischofsheim. So many hard names to pronounce, right?! Wurzburg is the final point of the route or the beginning, if you arrive by Frankfurt. Wurzburg is quite large, it has many old historic buildings and the Residence Palace, built in the 18th century. It was listed as a World Heritage site by UNESCO. Also make sure to visit St. Kilian’s Cathedral and the Marienburg Fortress. Lastly, to get a good look of the city, go up to Kapele.

I leave here an incredible route to share with you my joy of being able to talk about my great passion of traveling around the world!

A huge kiss to everyone and thank you for the company during this year!
