#DICAS DE VIAGEM- O CHARME DA CIDADE MEDIEVAL DE ÓBIDOS camila coelho

It is impossible for anyone not to fall in love with Óbidos. The most charming medieval city in Portugal is close to Lisbon – 80 kilometers – and if you do not know it yet, you must take a trip there. It is surrounded by very well preserved walls. Inside, the highlight is the castle. It is so beautiful that since 2007, it is considered as one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal. Around the castle, the streets enchant with white houses, with colorful details on the doors and windows.

To inspire even more, Obidos has a beautiful and pompous story. The castle was built in the 13th century and at that time, a certain king decided to give the city as a gift to his wife. Thus began the tradition of kings to spoil their wives by giving the city as a “wedding dowry.” Isn’t that amazing?

To get to Óbidos, it is ideal to go by car. But, there is also the possibility to go by bus. The journey takes about an hour and the bus stops at the entrance gate of the city. Just walk out and cross the street on the right, which in less than ten minutes you will have walked through the whole city and will have arrived at the castle. That is if a small shop in the way doesn’t distract you (they are super cute). They sell ceramics, handmade embroidery, lace, handicrafts, wines, a cachaça made from a type of cherry they usually drink with cup of hot chocolate. A delight!!!

Also visit the Municipal Museum, the Church of Santa Maria and be sure to walk along the walls for a mile. From the walls, one can see the city from above, the old aqueduct and the surrounding fields. Well worth the walk for sure. The town is so small that in two hours you will have seen it all. Then sit down for a coffee or take a break for lunch at Tasca Torta. There is also a restaurant in the castle that today functions as a hotel. However, it is more upscale and romantic, a nice place for dinner.

If you want to sleep one night in the city, I recommend Pousada Vila Óbidos, of the Pestana group, inside the walls, which has just been opened. It has the label “Charming Hotels”.
