That the Mediterranean Sea has one of the most incredible blues on the face of the earth… everyone already knows. But that it hides a gem called Comino, in the Malta archipelago, between Sicily and Tunisia, only few know. So if you’ve never heard of this island, pay close attention to the fluorescent shades of “jimson-blue” and I guarantee you’ll be dying to dive into this paradise.

Malta had been popping in my dreams for a long time. Until the day finally came. It’s a very small country, the smallest in the European Union. However, it is beautiful. Three of its inhabited islets are: Malta, Gozo and Comino, and the great star is undoubtedly Comino. So turquoise that it dazzles the eyes!

Comino is very, very small. It’s one and a half miles long by one mile. Tiny! It only has a simple hotel and some kiosks by the sea to receive the avalanche of tourists who sprout there in the European summer. To get there, you need to board a ferry (which departs both from the island of Gozo and the island of Malta) or rent a private boat (this is the best option!!).

Blue Lagoon is the most amazing place on the island. It looks like a lagoon but is actually a large natural pool formed in the sea between limestone slabs full of caves. The water is crystal clear. Those kinds of places you can’t believe in what you are seeing.

There is a trail over the cliff that leads to Crystal Lagoon, another beautiful natural pool. It’s also worth a boat ride around the island and stopping to dive in the Bays of Santa Maria and St. Nicholas.

Nitice that some boats have two eyes painted with vibrant colours. They are the “eyes of osiris”. They are the heritage of the period when the Phoenicians were on the island and they resemble those Turkish and Greek eyes, don’t they? They are part of the history of the Maltese Islands and serve to bring good luck and protection to the boats.

A great place to stay near Comino is the Kempiski San Lawrenz hotel in Gozo. From there in ten minutes you arrive by boat. Comino is a must! Put it on your wish list around the world. Write down these #clautips
