Hello everyone!
I am still in California. After spending a few days at Yosemite Park (I have already shown you last week), I went to San Francisco, a city that I always come back to with great pleasure. I will tell you what are the ten icons of San Francisco that you cannot miss whether on a first visit to the city or even if you are a habitué of the place.
1. Golden Gate. The bridge which is the face of San Francisco. It was built in 1937 and took 4 years to complete. Its two towers of red and its design are unmistakable. You can cross it either by car or bike.
2. Alcatraz. A small island in front of the Golden Gate. It houses the remains of what was once one of the most famous prisons in the world. Its walls and crates still hold deep secrets. To visit take the ferry that part off of Pier 33.
3. Fisherman’s Wharf. The pier has a mix of people, colorful shops, street artists, sea lions and boats. You have to try the traditional “clam chowder” on a bread bowl (soup of mussels). It is a place full of life.
4. Ferry Building. The trademark of San Francisco. The location served as transportation hub of the city until 1930. The building with the clock tower was devastated by an earthquake. In 2003 the area was reconstructed. Now the market is the star of the building.
5. Coit Tower. At the top of Telegraph Hill, the concrete tower ensures a 360 degree view of the city since 1933. Take the elevator and climb up the center of the tower.
6. Lombard Street. This is the most famous street in the city. It’s curves join hordes of visitors. Go down the street by car or on foot, between the flower gardens, is mandatory itinerary.
7. Trolleys/Cable Cars. The opened cable cars are pure charm by the slopes of the city and mimic the originals of 1873. Sit in a wooden bench and take a ride along the hills of California
8. Painted Ladies. These Victorian houses painted in soft colors seem like something out of a fairy tale. Sit on the lawn of the Alamo Square and have in front of you one of the most well known views of the city.
9. De Young Museum. The museum integrates art, architecture and nature. A tower in a spiral surrounded by much greenery ensures a good view of the bay. It is located in the Golden Gate Park which is well worth a visit.
10. SFMoMA. The museum has gained an expansion and was reopened in 2016. It is a must see with exhibitions and collections of modern art.
