World Cup is approaching. Russia on the rise. The eyes of the world are already beginning to turn there. And let’s agree that the country is beautiful, immense, imposing, frosty and boasts the most beautiful square in the world: the Red Square of Moscow. What a magnificent place! It symbolizes Russian power along with the Kremlin. A simple walk through the square already makes the trip worthwhile.

The first place that fills the eyes is the colorful St. Basil’s Cathedral. It was built in 1552 by order of Ivan the Terrible (the name already says it all) to commemorate one of his conquests. The Orthodox church has spectacular architecture and vibrant colors. Legend has it that when the work was completed, Ivan had the architect blinded so that he could not make any other church as impressive as that one. How horrible! I hope it’s just a legend. Today, the cathedral functions as a kind of museum. It’s beautiful on the outside and inside.

A few steps further down is the Mausoleum of Lenin. It was embalmed by the government in 1924 and since then its body is kept in a sarcophagus with constant temperature. This is a controversial subject. Some entities suggest the burial of the Bolshevik leader.

Arbitrarily, in front of the mausoleum of the communist leader stands the luxurious GUM Shopping, symbol of capitalism. The building used to be a market used to exchange goods. It’s very beautiful. It has large arches covered with iron and glass that let the light in and give a very welcoming vibe. Worth a visit.

Another building I love in the square is the Museum of Russian History. The museum is not one of the best in the city, but the red building with white towers is a tremendous charm.

In front of the museum there is another lovely church, the Kazan Cathedral. It is small, colorful and very charming. It is dedicated to the Virgin of Kazan. You will love it.

To leave the Red Square and head towards the Kremlin, you will pass under two red domed towers called the Resurrection Gate. In front of this gate there lies the smallest and cutest chapel in the city, dedicated to the Iverian Virgin. There are always people making wishes in front of it.

The buildings that make up this square compose a beautiful scenery. When the ball is rolling in Moscow you will surely see many pictures of the square. Do not take your eyes off it. After all, it is simply the most beautiful square in the world!
