I want to see if you know what town of Minas Gerais (Brazil) I’m talking about: “Colorful colonial houses, cobblestone streets, baroque churches that are true relics, little shops filled with local handicrafts, Maria Fumaça’s whistle and a cuisine that makes everyone’s mouth water. ” Do you know it yet?
It has existed since the 18th century. It was born with the Gold Cycle and was the scene of the Inconfidência Mineira. It lives so quietly with its mansions, lanterns and monuments that makes us go back in time while tasting a cheese bread (pão de queijo) or a slice of guava.
If you thought of the most cutest Tiradentes, you got it right! What a charming city!
The idea is to choose a hotel in the main square, leave the car parked and walk the city on foot. I really like Solar da Ponte, with the label Roteiros de Charme. A historic mansion with only 18 apartments elegantly decorated and respecting tradition. Just cross the bridge and the main square is in front of you. Then, alleys and ridges follow one another filled with places that deserve to be explored.
Do not miss the Matriz de Santo Antônio, a beautiful baroque church! It is considered the second richest in gold in Brazil (the first is in Salvador) and its façade was idealized by Aleijadinho. Almost in front of the church is the Casa da Câmara, of great historical importance, because it was where the emperors met.
Visit the Sant’Ana Museum. It has a beautiful collection with more than 300 images of the saint that protects families, homes and miners, and is also located in the former public prison building that has been completely restored.
Walk to the San José Fountain (Chafariz São José) built by the slaves to supply the village with water that comes from a nearby spring and works until today.
Enjoy a great lunch in Viradas do Largo, by chef Beth Beltrão, that nails it in Minas Gerais food. For dinner go to the Tragaluz. These two restaurants are a must !!!!
If you have time, take a tour of Maria Fumaça (10 miles) to São João del Rei, another very charming city.
Also go to Bichinho, which is seven kilometers away, the redoubt of local handicrafts.
Impossible not to fall in love with the historic cities of Minas Gerais.
