We passed day # 100 of the quarantine and we continue at home. It’s interesting that we have never traveled so much without leaving the couch. With the madness of this pandemic caused by the coronavirus, many traditional events around the world are being adapted to the new moment we live in and broadcast online for the first time. This is the case with the celebration of the sun God in the ruins of Cuzco, Peru.
The Inti Raymi party is among the most anticipated events on the Peruvian calendar. It takes place every year on June 24, during the winter solstice, with performances both in the central square of Cuzco and in the ruins of Sacsaywuaman, beginning the Andean New Year. Many people follow the party, both city dwellers and tourists. However, this year the event will take place virtually only through the Facebook page and the Youtube channel of the Municipal Party Company of Cuzco (EMUFEC) with the publication of videos from previous years’ parties.
Inti Raymi is a very ancient Inca religious celebration in sun worship. In the past, the celebrations lasted two weeks and sacrifices and dances dedicated to the sun God were made. The last Inti Raymi made in the presence of the Inca Emperor took place in 1535. The tradition today remains as a theatrical staging, to keep the past alive.
When all this is over and it is possible to travel again, I suggest that you live a beautiful experience in Cuzco in the best traditional style. Stay at the Belmond Hotel Monastery housed in a building from 1595 that was once an Inca palace and is in the heart of the city. The building is wonderful. Singular!
