While 2020 fashion trends may have felt like they came to a complete halt at the beginning of the pandemic, there are a few that have withstood the ever-changing climate this year has thrown at us. Sweat sets are now a staple in most people’s wardrobe and knit sets have been selling out of all the major retails for months. Unique earrings have been a zoom call staple and athletic styles have kept us motivated to move our bodies everyday.
Another major trend we’ve seen take off this year is the micro crop top—a crop top so mini that it’s compared to a bra or swimsuit top. And while this style may seem intimidating at first glance, it’s actually both easy to style and comfortable to wear. Whether it’s a knit sweater-style top or simple and streamlined or ribbed with an interesting texture, a micro crop top adds a modern twist to any look. The key to keeping a micro top looking elevated is to pair it with a bottom that has an ultra-high waist cut.

A high-waisted bottom balances the minimal fabric on top perfectly, creating a silhouette that’s both flattering and interesting. High-waisted trousers always feel directional, while jeans provide a more laid back vibe. During the warmer months we saw high-waisted tailored shorts paired with bra tops of all kinds, usually paired with a sweater or blazer thrown on top. Even your signature sweatpants look instantly pulled together paired with a soft knit bra top.
The most popular way to wear the micro crop top trend has been with an oversize blazer thrown on top. Whether the bottom half consists of shorts, trousers or a skirt, an oversize blazer plays with proportions perfectly. The same idea applies to an oversize jacket or sweater as well—anything with a larger fit will perfectly juxtapose the fitted top and exposed skin. So for a fall outfit that feels quintessentially 2020, grab your favorite micro crop top, add a high-waisted trouser, oversize blazer, and sneakers, and of course a mask.
