Highlighter is a versatile product that makes all the difference in makeup. This is because this product is essential to highlight key points of the face, areas that you want to “bring forward” or “lift”, such as the small bones of the nose, the temples and the cupid’s bow (the area above the lips). In addition, you can also apply the product below the eyebrow, on the chin, and in the center of the forehead.

The beauty market presents different colors, textures and finishes of highlighters. In today’s post we will tell you all about this product, so you can find out which type best suits your makeup style.

Powder Highlighter

The powder highlighter is the most famous and used in makeup. This type of product tends to last longer on the skin and comes in a variety of shades, for all skin types. However, mature skin and skin with more pronounced textures need to be more careful when using powder illuminator, as it can highlight fine expression lines.

Liquid Highlighter

Liquid highlighter is usually softer and ensures an (almost) natural and healthy glow to the skin. You can use it alone or mixed with foundation to make your skin even more radiant. In this case, those with combination or very oily skin should avoid it, because the product can accentuate the exaggerated shine of the skin.

Cream Highlighter

Cream highlighter is more consistent than liquid highlighter, but the effects are very similar. It can be used to create the “base” from which the powder highlighter will be applied, thus making the glow last much longer on the skin. For the product not to be too marked on the skin, it is recommended to use a synthetic brush or your fingertips (giving light strokes).

“Which shade is right for me?”

The highlighters that are more golden in color are usually more suitable for darker skin tones. As for the highlighters in shades of champagne and rosy, they are more suitable for lighter skin tones. Easy, right?

How and when to use highlighter

There are no rules in makeup, so you can use the highlighter on different occasions – and times of day, just know where you want to apply the product and choose the version you like the most.

To apply the product, you can use a brush, a sponge or even your own fingers, giving light strokes. Brushes with very light bristles are usually more suitable for spreading the powder highlighter. The sponge and fingers are used more to apply liquid and creamy products.
